I would like to start with the quote, "Nothing great was achieved without enthusiasm" by Emerson.
This enthusiasm was the key element of the journey of personal projects presented by students of Grade 4 of Ryan Global School, as a culmination to their units under the transdisciplinary theme of ‘Sharing the planet’ and ‘How the world works’.
The students identified the burning issues that incited them to conduct an in-depth inquiry. They were facilitated by their homeroom teachers, specialist teachers and mentors. They connected with the community and researched to set their actionable goals to bring about a sustainable change. Their projects aligned with the sustainable development goals program of the United Nation. This Personal project gave the students a platform to demonstrate agency and take ownership of their learning. They developed the attitude of international mindedness as they conducted their personal inquiries and presented it confidently to the IB learning community.
The PYP exhibition is the culmination of the PYP. It is an opportunity for students to apply all that they have learned through their journey as a PYP student. They have had the chance to work collaboratively/individually to investigate a global issue with local significance. They showed their understanding of the five essential elements: knowledge, skills, attitudes, concepts and action as well as displayed various attributes of the Learner Profile. Every great teacher wants his or her students to find joy in the learning process. How do we as educators provide students with an environment to discover who they are, help them unlock the passions they hold, and guide their journey of self-discovery while also teaching our mandated curriculum? The answer is simpler than you might imagine: provide time for students to explore their passions.
For the past ten years, students of Grade five at Ryan Global School have participated in the PYP Exhibition. It is a way to celebrate their learning with the local community. Over the years, it has proven to be a highlight of the year and has produced amazing results. With a change to the enhanced PYP we have had to revise our approach to the Personal Passion Project and so now is the perfect time to reflect on the past and identify the lessons learned. This year, we decided to take a challenge and try “Passion Projects” to help our students find joy by exploring topics that intrigued them. Students were helped to narrow down the scope of their project. Students were encouraged to focus more on the process instead of the final product. Teachers set aside time for students to work on a research or passion project of their choice. Once the planning was done, it was time to set our students loose on their Passion Projects!
Students began their work by coming up with a list of things that made them happy. To make the Passion Projects manageable, we guided them to narrow their focus to one question or a big idea they wanted to explore and we encouraged them to identify areas about which they wanted to learn more. Through IKGAI Model, they identified their passion with their parents. Students investigated a local issue with global significance. To provide support and guidance during this lengthy process, we encouraged students to use both low-tech and high-tech research options. Many students found the answers to their questions in library books. Others used alternate resources like Internet research etc. They used a range of resources to investigate the issue. They thought and collected the burning issue from the newspaper and internet. Few students showed futuristic plans and shared their ideas through a design, thinking model and did backward planning towards their project. We came up with many ideas such as a gaming app, education app, cybercrime, sustainability in sports, a profession in arts, water crisis, marine life, pollution and road safety etc. Next, they wrote their essential agreements as a team. They used the PYP learner profiles to make their agreements more meaningful. Further, they created their own central ideas and lines of inquiry and identified the key concepts that helped them to drive their investigation and identify the key questions of their topic on which they want to inquire. During the exhibition, students got the opportunities to learn from a variety of sources including experts of different fields, guest speakers, field visits etc. They connected with the local community, took surveys, visited different places and gathered the data from different resources for their topic. They represented their findings through different visible thinking routines and graphic organizers. Using their summarizing skills, students were able to write clear descriptions of what they learned through different primary and secondary sources. Giving time to actively reflect on the process has been important. During the PYP Exhibition, students have had several opportunities to complete peer and self-assessment of their progress. Students were able to step back and assess what they have achieved and what remained to be accomplished. They shared their ideas with peers which were most beneficial as they reflected on their learning and the “Action” component. The act of reflecting on the process has also benefited many students when it is time to share their projects with the world as their audience is as interested in the process as they are in the product. This feed-forward helps students identify their success and the area in which they have to improve. Collaboration between students is an important part of many projects. Wherever possible foster the opportunities for collaboration while allowing each student to maintain control of their project. The power of collaboration will lift the quality of the projects as students share ideas and encourage each other to go beyond expectations. They were excited about their own digital creations. They created their Individual Logos and later they created the PYP Passion Project LOGO all with smiles, laughter, and joy!
Grade five students had showcased their work with an authentic audience of classmates, teachers, parents, Different IB schools and administrators at a Passion Project Share Fair. They shared their learning, Independent inquiry with lots of joy and confidence. As guests walked from a combination of different ways of presenting their choices, laptop to laptop, stations to stations, listening to the student presentations, they validated the time and effort students had put into their work. They were able to clearly see how each student had come to realize the joy of learning through the exploration of their passions.
"Your dreams are what define your individuality. They have the power to give you wings and make you fly high." –PV Sindhu.

On the 16th of August, a short Mental Health Awareness Programme was organised for both the students and the teachers by the Exceptional Children Organisation in association with The Live Love Laugh Foundation.
While the session for students dealt with explaining and asking them to address these issues, the teachers were explained how to take care of students who have trouble dealing with mental health. The participants were made aware of issues like anxiety, depression, bullying and their differences. This programme proved very beneficial to everyone as the teachers and students shared their grievances. Ms. Ashita, the speaker, also spoke about the different kinds of mental health professionals in the field. Helpline information, FAQs and even breathing exercises were provided in order to help anyone in need. This interactive session ended with all smiles on the faces of students and teachers.
Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. This session was a great help in shaping the lives of our students and teachers in a positive way and we believe they in turn will definitely contribute to make the world become a better place.
With the growing incidents of indifference in society, mental health is an essential life skill to nurture. It is a powerful tool to build social and emotional relatedness and connection with self and others. The Department of Mental Health and Behavioural Sciences, under the aegis of Dr. Samir Parikh, introduced a 45-minute workshop on the A to Z of Empathy for school students. The workshop prepares the students to learn empathetic skills and emotional intelligence. A Team from the Department of Mental Health and Behavioural Sciences, Fortis National Mental Health Program (Fortis Healthcare), conducted this much needed workshop for our students. Every human emotion was attached and related to each English Alphabet form the 26 letters, that's why the workshop is titled as ‘A to Z of Empathy’. It was a workshop that made the concept of Mental Health easy to understand. The students were very engrossed in the workshop.
If students are made aware of mental health from their young age, they will not hesitate to talk about it and help others as well (even in the future). These workshops have a long-term effect focused on prevention better than the cure concept. At the end of the workshop not only the students, but also the teachers found it very helpful.

PERSONAL PROJECTS
I would like to start with the quote, “Nothing great was achieved without enthusiasm” by Emerson. This enthusiasm was the key element of the journey of a personal project presented by students of Grade 4 of Ryan Global School, as a culmination to their units under the transdisciplinary theme of ‘Sharing the planet’ and ‘How the world works’.
The students identified their burning issues that incited them to conduct an in-depth inquiry. They were facilitated by their homeroom teachers, specialist teachers and mentors. Their projects aligned with the sustainable development goals program of the United Nation.
Personal project gave the students a platform to demonstrate agency and take ownership of their learning. They developed the attitude of international mindedness as they conducted their personal inquiries and presented it confidently to the IB learning community.
